1- What year did you start at Ricky Richards?
Since 1984
2- In words that potential customers, who know nothing about Ricky will understand, what is your role?
Constantly evolving from somewhere between “still don’t know” and “almost got it”. Chief Distraction Officer still has a ring to it.
3- What are your professional strengths in this role?
I don’t like constraints and the so called ‘normal’ way of doing things. We do it because others won’t do it.
4- Looking back on the year 2020, how has your role changed and how have you adapted to the ‘new normal’?
Letting go of more things as our management team become stronger. Finding where I can be of the most benefit to the company rather than doing things because I have done them for years. I don’t believe that there is a ‘new normal’ there is rather a ‘new way’. Adapting to less people in the office on a daily basis is challenging for a company like ours. We are very much in each other’s lives at work and with more remote work occurring that has disappeared a little.
5- What was one job that you did well in the last 12 months that you know made a big difference to your customer or your team?
Got really focussed on our sales and had more interaction with our customers. That’s not a job baby, that’s simply fun!
6- If you could be a superhero for a day, who would you be?
I reckon if I said Wonder Woman we could gauge how many people read these bios. Truth be known I reckon I was a closet bat because I always wanted a utility belt as a kid. If anybody is reading this, I never did get that utility belt – just saying.
7- Favourite sports team?
The mighty Sydney City Roosters in rugby league and the Carlton Blues in AFL. Go you good things!
8- What is one thing on your ‘bucket list’?
A bucket?

How long have you been with Ricky Richards?
60 years in various businesses and 35 years with my sons at Ricky!
In words that potential customers, who know nothing about this business will understand, what is your role?
Grand old man
What are your professional strengths in this role?
I was always extremely good from an operational and financial viewpoint. I would have to say that you would not employ me as a salesman as it would have been disastrous! I managed to keep my sons on an even keel with each other while they built this great business designed to help customers and suppliers alike
If there was one thing that you wished people could understand about the way you fulfill your role, what would it be?
That getting older isn’t so easy but I still like to make a difference
What do you hope to achieve in your role at Ricky Richards?
At 86 years of age while I don’t come in every day (Only twice a week), I still take a keen interest in the well-being of the people who have become a part of a large extended family at Ricky. I hope to be around for a few more years yet!!!

1- What year did you start at Ricky Richards?
2013
2- In words that potential customers, who know nothing about Ricky will understand, what is your role?
I wear several hats in my position of GM and it starts with the coach’s hat that backs my team 100% and gives them everything they need to fulfill their roles as well as the pep talks about our game play. I very much wear the cheerleader hat as a passionate advocate of all things Ricky. I have a fantastic team that go above and beyond daily to make our customers lives easier and that is something to pump those pom poms for. Then I can get all serious in wearing my strategy hat, when we talk the ‘future’ Ricky and positioning ourselves as leaders in textiles in Australia, holding our values at the core of every decision we make and ensuring we encompass our social responsibility. Then lastly, I wear the hat of integrator to the visionary, Laurel to Hardy, ying to yang, otherwise known as Ron’s (the owner/my boss) ballast. Ron has the big, hairy, audacious ideas and my job is to take them, distil them into a workable idea and engage the team to implement it as part of the overall vision.
3- What are your professional strengths in this role?
I’m not sure if you can get professional training on being Laurel to Hardy, but I was fortunate to work for some really amazing bosses in the past that allowed me to see what good partnerships and teams looked like and I continually want to emulate that. I was once described as the ‘Swiss army knife’ at a previous organisation and I think my adaptability and various roles in Operations have steered me into the role of GM and it has always been about finding solutions. I love getting my hands dirty and seeing how everything works. Yes, I was that kid that always asked why? And I am still doing it!
4- Looking back on the year 2020, how has your role changed and how have you adapted to the ‘new normal’?
2020 has been the greatest year of awareness personally and professionally for me. March 2020 will certainly go down as the month of fear of the unknown and action. Moving all the office staff was very quick and easy based on some IT upgrades that had been done in the months preceding and we had a team that wanted to make it work. As GM, staying focused was the biggest challenge as the media threw a lot of noise out there so it was important to check that the team were ok, could work and were mentally coping. In the background, myself and our FC Jim were working on ‘what if’ scenarios for the business and how long we could survive if we did have to close down for a period. So, for me, I think that 2020 has shown me that we can’t take anything for granted, the luxury of freedom we are afforded in this country can be taken away in a moment and we all have a duty to reconnect to each other in new ways. Not only to do business but to check in that people are ok. My role has always been accountable to the P&L, but now it is just as accountable to the welfare of the people that make up that P&L and that includes not only our team, but our customers and suppliers too.
5- What was one job that you did well in the last 12 months that you know made a big difference to your customer or your team?
This is a hard one for me as I’m my own harshest critic, but I would like to think that staying the course and holding strong for the team was the difference. We didn’t knee jerk because of a couple of poor months, we kept up our purchasing and made contingency plans for extra stock if one of our suppliers were about to go into lockdown. This held us in good stead, and I can say from the feedback received that we have been one of the strongest suppliers in the industry in maintaining supply. This has been an unprecedented season in regard to demand for many of our customers and we are glad that Ricky was part of their success.
6- If you could be a superhero for a day, who would you be?
My 2 favourites as a child were the Incredible Hulk and She Ra. Putting aside that the Incredible Hulk had anger issues, they both displayed strength that I admired to stand up and make a difference.
7- Favourite sports team?
Not a massive sports nut, and as a recent addition to the QLD population, I have been warned my job is on the line if I convert to a maroon! But I technically have been a maroon since I was 12, or a ‘jambo’ as supporters of Heart of Midlothian, local Edinburgh team, are known. And then there is Scottish Rugby, but they are no longer what they once were…… best not to pick a team!
8- What is one thing on your ‘bucket list’?
Some of my bucket list items are formed from books from when I was a child and one thing I ‘had’ on my bucket list was to see the ‘Great wall of China’ and in 2017 I was lucky enough to spend 5 days walking it raising money for Melanoma Institute Australia, meeting the best bunch of people and understanding the devasting disease that Melanoma is. But another is to go see the heads on Easter Island. I was always fascinated with the folklore of how the heads got there.

My role as a Business Development Manager is to ensure that my customers receive the very best in customer service, technical knowledge, quality product offerings and are kept up to date with industry trends that will help them achieve business growth.
3- What are your professional strengths in this role?
Honesty, Integrity & Reliability
4- Looking back on the year 2020, how has your role changed and how have you adapted to the ‘new normal’?
Video calls, Zoom meetings & longer phone conversations were utilised to take over from the usual Face2Face contact with customers. This did not seem to have a huge impact on dealings with customers, as we were all still able to communicate over these platforms. Making appointments for Face2Face visits now is imperative for a constructive visit.

Organised consignment stock to be put in place and set up for a customer in a very timely manner, to avoid long freight delays due to the situation with the pandemic.

1- What year did you start at Ricky Richards?
2021 Before that 2000 - 2016
2- In words that potential customers, who know nothing about Ricky will understand, what is your role?
My role is to inform, educate, and service the customers of Victoria and Tasmania in everything Ricky Richards has to offer from Sun Control to Technical Textiles.
3- What are your professional strengths in this role?
I believe my diverse knowledge and experience managing many various varieties of textiles would be a key advantage in my role. I have been in the industry for almost 20 years and have developed great relationships and friendships within the industry that I truly value.
4- Looking back on the year 2020, how has your role changed and how have you adapted to the ‘new normal’?
I believe the biggest change that we have all had to go through is adapting to the way we engage with each other and how we develop relationships both business and personal. The reliance on technology such as Zoom has taken some time to adapt to but now offers a new communication approach. Phone communication replaced the face-to-face meeting approach in the short-term during 2021 and remains an essential communication tool when assisting our clients.
5- What was one job that you did well in the last 12 months that you know made a big difference to your customer or your team?
Adapting to not being able to have face-to-face interaction. Regular client and staff Zoom meetings where we could at least see each was a strong focus for myself. For someone who craves social connection, I found other ways to engage with my team and customers that I felt not only allowed me to do my job more efficiently and effectively but was also a benefit to my team and customers. This immediate connection helped keep us in touch with each other on a regular basis during lockdown.
6- If you could be a superhero for a day, who would you be?
7- Favourite sports team?
I don’t really have a favourite sport team (don’t tell my husband that the Bulldogs ie. NRL Bulldogs aren’t my favourite) I do love sport in general though. I enjoy any sport that is exciting, inspiring or competitive. LOVED the Olympics during 2021, wish it was on every year. I have played soccer most of my life. If I had to pick a code, it would be soccer.
8- What is one thing on your ‘bucket list’?
It has probably changed since the challenges of COVID-19, and for this reason I would say that all I want now is to have a life with my family that is filled with health, happiness, and FREEDOM. Sounds so cliché I know, but something I truly value more than any exotic holiday or adventurous journey. When you experience the recent global and health challenges, it’s the simple things in life that become more important to you. Well, they do to me.
