Ricky Richards is the Major Sponsor of Jay’s Mission Melanoma Walk 2022! The walk will begin on November 25th in Canberra and finish on December 4th in Sydney, with the goal of fundraising and driving advocacy for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. Jay Allen, Founder of the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation (ASCF), will be leading the charge for the 333 km walk aiming to raise $250,000 to go towards the development and treatment of Melanoma and Non-Melanoma skin cancers.
We’re really excited about the new partnership with ASCF, continuing our long-held relationship with Jay. In supporting Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) for many years now, partnering with Jay’s new initiative is a natural addition in supporting another cause that aligns with our mission to ensure Australians are protected from the sun and its harmful UV rays. We are looking forward to working with and supporting ASCF with Jay’s Mission Melanoma Walk and beyond!
Who Is ASCF & What Do They Do?
The Australian Skin Cancer Foundation’s launched in December 2021 to support both Melanoma and Non-Melanoma skin cancers. The Foundation is based on 4 Pillars:
- Advocacy – To make skin checks more affordable and accessible for the everyday Australian
- Education – To educate people about the importance of early detection of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers and how to prevent it.
- Support – To provide monthly support meetings, online content and one-on-one support for patients.
- Research – To continue funding Melanoma clinical trials to find a cure.
Importance of Melanoma & Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Research
Having the highest melanoma rates in the world, Melanoma is often referred to as ‘Australia’s National Cancer’. According to the Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA), it is estimated that 1 Australian dies from melanoma every 6 hours. One of the major causes of melanoma is due to overexposure to UV radiation from the sun, with 95% of melanoma diagnoses rooted from this issue.
The Walk
Phase 1
Last year, the BETTER Trial was made possible thanks to the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation’s (ASCF’s) fundraising efforts. This trial tests new treatments that aims to improve care treatment and the quality of life for patients with melanoma brain metastases. Through the ASCF’s first Mission Melanoma campaign, $100,000 was raised to start the trial with a small group of patients. This is currently going into phase 1, where 3-4 patients are recruited and are offered different treatment alternatives.
This year, Jay’s Mission Melanoma Walk, with their target of $250,000 will help in continuing funding this trial to help those who need it most. The 333km walk aims to raise awareness for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers while fundraising for their mission. If phase 1 goes well, and the patient can tolerate the treatment, then they’ll progress to phase 2.
Phase 2
Phase 2 needs $2.1 Million to continue, which is why Ricky Richards is dedicated to helping with ASCF reach this goal. This stage will assess the intracranial clinical benefit of treatment, including how effective the combination immunotherapy treatment is at reducing brain metastases, and the level of response observed.
